The matrix comes before the chapter
Nobody writes a literature review by reading until they feel ready. They build a matrix. Every study gets a line of its own, and beside it go the group studied, the approach taken, what came out of it and where it fell short, entered the moment you finish reading rather than later.
Two things follow that loose notes never deliver. Months of rereading disappear, since everything worth extracting already sits in one view. And the shape of the field becomes visible: who agrees, who diverges, and whether the gap you intend to claim is genuinely there. The chapter then gets composed from the table itself.

Every institution publishes a formatting manual for doctoral work, and every year students discover it in the final fortnight. Margins, heading hierarchy, table captions, how the appendices are numbered, where the page numbers restart. None of it is intellectual and all of it is checked, frequently by a reviewer whose entire job is checking it.
So formatting is applied from chapter one instead of retrofitted at the end. Retrofitting a finished dissertation into an unfamiliar template reliably takes a week that nobody has, and it happens at precisely the moment your attention is needed elsewhere.
A harder room than the real one
The mock defense is deliberately uncomfortable. Questions come from wherever the argument is thinnest rather than wherever it is strongest, because a rehearsal that flatters you has taught you nothing.
The report afterwards is consistent enough to be worth stating: students say their actual committee asked two things they had already answered out loud. That is the whole return on the exercise. Finding your own soft spot before a room finds it turns a defense into something you steer rather than something that happens to you.
When two committee members disagree
It is common, it is rarely anybody misbehaving, and it puts you in an impossible position: two sets of written comments pulling in different directions and no instruction about which governs.
Deciding quietly in favour of one is the costly move, since the overruled member reads your next draft too. The workable answer is a brief, unloaded note asking them both to settle it between themselves, and your mentor writes that with you. Where the disagreement is really about scope rather than method, that usually surfaces the moment somebody asks the question in writing. Do you write the dissertation?
No. A committee will ask you, out loud, to justify the method you picked, and nothing rescues a document its author cannot explain. What mentoring supplies is a frame to work inside, help drafting at the stuck points, someone who has crossed this ground already, and candid reactions well before your chair offers theirs.
What actually goes in a literature matrix?
A line per study, carrying the reference, who was studied, how, what was concluded and what weakened it. Complete each line immediately, never on the promise of coming back. Done properly the table stands in for both your notes and any second reading, and the chapter is drafted straight out of it.
How late can mentoring still help?
Up to the week of the defense, and those final sessions repay themselves. Those sessions cover the questions your specific committee gravitates toward, a slide deck trimmed to your actual slot rather than your ambitions, and speaking the awkward answers aloud beforehand instead of assembling them while everyone waits.
My chair keeps changing direction. Is that normal?
Extremely, and it is usually the work revealing something rather than anybody being difficult. A later chapter exposes a weakness in an earlier framework and the earlier chapter reopens. Building in slack for exactly that is why the calendar has room in it, and why chapters are dated backwards from the defense rather than forwards from today.
Who would be assigned to me?
A doctorate-holder from your discipline who has sat on the supervising or examining side before, chosen according to whether your degree wants a practice project or original research, because the two get judged against separate expectations. One person carries you to the defense; nobody is handed on partway.
