A practice project changes something in a real setting, which means a real organisation has to agree to be changed. That permission is the single most underestimated step in the doctorate, and students routinely leave it until the proposal is written, at which point a refusal costs a whole term.
So it gets pursued first, in parallel with narrowing the topic rather than after it. Often the answer is your own employer, which is faster and produces better work because you can already see what needs fixing. Where that is not possible, or where your program restricts studying your own workplace, the search runs like a placement search and takes about as long.

Choose an outcome the setting already measures
Next in line as a cause of delay is settling on something nobody can produce figures for. Designing the intervention is the straightforward half; without a reading from before and a reading afterwards it is worth nothing, and standing up fresh collection inside a working department is an undertaking of its own.
Draw the measure instead from whatever the place already keeps. Return rates, how often something was documented, the interval before a particular step, an audit already running on a quarterly cycle. It reads as a compromise and functions as the thing that lets a project close, since those figures accumulate with or without anybody's cooperation.
This is not a thesis, and the difference costs terms
The first begins with a fault on a live ward, imports an intervention the evidence base already supports, and quantifies the shift. The second manufactures knowledge that was simply absent until you produced it, held up by a method designed to survive being challenged. They are read by different people against different expectations.
Hand in the wrong kind and back it comes irrespective of the writing, which is the costliest mistake on offer in this degree. Mentors here are assigned according to which degree you are genuinely enrolled on, and this article draws the line clearly if you remain unsure which one your program expects.
Approval, chapters and the room
Where you are collecting anything beyond routinely available data, a review board becomes involved and its meeting calendar becomes your calendar. That work runs alongside the early chapters through the research desk rather than after them, because sequencing it afterwards is what turns a tight timeline into a lost term.
The chapters themselves get coached one at a time, sized to sittings you can actually finish, with a mock defense before the real one. Ours is deliberately more uncomfortable than the room you will face, on the reasoning that a rehearsal which flatters you has taught you nothing at all.

I have no site yet. Where do I begin?
With your own workplace, if your program permits studying it. You know how the place works, the person granting approval already knows you, and you can tell an actual problem from a hypothetical one. Where that is ruled out, the search runs like a placement search and needs a similar runway, so start it now rather than after the proposal.
How do I pick an outcome measure?
From data the organisation already collects, almost always. Readmission figures, screening rates, time to a particular step, an audit somebody already runs. Designing fresh data collection inside a busy unit is a second project you do not have time for, and it is the commonest reason a well-conceived intervention never produces a result.
Does my project need review board approval?
It depends on what you collect and whether you intend to generalise beyond your setting, and that determination belongs to your institution rather than to you. Ask early and in writing, and keep the answer. Proceeding on an assumption is what causes real trouble later, particularly if you subsequently want to publish the work.
How is this different from a PhD dissertation?
A practice project applies existing evidence to a real problem and measures what changed. A research dissertation generates knowledge that did not previously exist. Both are doctoral and neither is easier, they simply answer to different standards, and handing in one where the other is expected gets it returned regardless of how well it is written.
Will you write it for me?
No. A committee will have you justify each decision aloud, and nothing rescues a document whose author cannot explain it. What mentoring provides is structure, drafting help where you are stuck, somebody who has been through the process, and blunt reactions before your chair supplies theirs.
