THE CHEAPEST THING WE SELL

Draft review.

The most underused service here, and frequently the one that moves a grade furthest. You keep writing your own work. Somebody who knows the subject reads it against the marking criteria before your instructor does.

Why this beats having it written

It costs a fraction of preparation, it takes two days rather than a week, and for anybody capable of writing their own material it often produces the same grade. The reason is unglamorous: most drafts are not badly written, they are misaimed, and misaiming is cheap to correct once somebody points at it.

It also leaves the work unambiguously yours, which matters if there is a seminar, a viva or a live discussion anywhere in the course. You wrote it, you can defend it, and somebody simply told you which parts were not doing the job you thought they were doing.

The fix-first list

Every review ends with three things ranked by how much they are worth, because a full markup is useless at eleven at night when the deadline is tomorrow.

That ranking is the part people say they value most. It is easy to receive twenty comments and spend the remaining evening on the three easiest ones, which are almost never the three most expensive. Being told plainly that the analysis section is losing four times what the formatting is losing changes where an hour goes.

The criteria get read before your draft

This ordering decides everything else. A prompt tells you the subject; the criteria tell you the conditions marks are awarded under, and that document is what sits open in front of whoever grades you.

Your draft therefore gets taken row by row, and what comes back states plainly where each one is satisfied, where it is only half there, and where nothing addresses it. Ordinarily a single row, occasionally two, is bleeding more than the whole remainder put together, and that is what leads the report. Should the verdict be that the piece wants building rather than mending, that carries its own price and you hear it said outright instead of being quietly upsold.

References get opened

Formatting a citation is mechanical. Establishing that the thing exists is not, and it has become the place student papers most often come apart. Put together a believable journal, a genuine researcher and a paper that never existed and no formatting tool will object, though the illusion ends the instant somebody tries to find it.

So each entry is retrieved and read, and where a source does not support the sentence pointing at it, that is reported too. Where you would rather have somebody carry the whole course instead of checking one piece of it, that is the larger service, but most people who arrive here do not need it.

Criterion verdicts, in-line comments, verified references, and the three things to fix first.

3

Fix it yourself

Work the list, ask about anything unclear, and submit your own work having improved it.

Questions people actually ask.

Is a review just proofreading under another name?

Proofreading looks at the surface: typos, punctuation, inconsistent capitals. A review looks at whether the piece satisfies the criteria it is being marked against, which is a different question entirely and a more valuable one. Immaculate proofreading buys nothing where a criterion goes unaddressed: that paper drops precisely the marks an untidy one would.

What if there is nothing much wrong with it?

Yes, and it happens regularly. Where a piece already satisfies the criteria and reads well, what returns is a brief note confirming as much, not a bill for corrections nobody required. Inventing faults would serve us badly anyway, because a beautifully corrected paper that still marks poorly is the thing people remember about a service.

Can you predict my grade?

No figure, since nobody being straight with you could give one. Something more practical arrives in its place: a row-by-row account of what is satisfied, what is partial, what is missing, and which paragraph is answerable for each. A guessed letter locates nothing; this locates exactly where the marks are leaving and hands you something to do about it.

What if my deadline is tonight?

Say so and the review changes shape. Rather than a complete markup you receive the three highest-value repairs achievable in whatever time is genuinely left, in order, each pointing at a named paragraph. It is deliberately less thorough and it is the right call when time has run out. Send it rather than deciding it is too late.

Is using a review service allowed?

In nearly every institution, and most universities fund a writing centre doing something similar. What every version of that permission depends on is the reasoning remaining yours, and it is exactly why the notes here diagnose rather than quietly repair. Where your program sets a specific rule about outside readers, tell us and we work inside it.
