THE PREFLIGHT · DOCTORAL

DNP project versus PhD dissertation.

2026-08-10 · by Elena R., DNP · Capstone mentor

Two documents, two committees, two vocabularies, and a handbook that uses the word capstone for both. The confusion I see is rarely about how to write either one. It is about which one somebody has been writing for eight months.

One sentence tells you which you are writing

Before anything else, finish this in writing: my work exists so that ___. Where the blank fills with a place, a unit, a clinic, a district, a company, you are on the practice side. Where it fills with a field, a body of evidence or an open debate, you are on the research side.

It sounds glib and it is the fastest diagnostic available. Show the sentence to your chair in week one and you find out immediately whether the two of you are describing the same document. Nearly every catastrophic doctoral detour I have watched began with two people saying capstone confidently and meaning different things by it, for months, in the same email thread.

What each is built to leave behind

A useful way to hold the distinction is to ask what physically remains once the defence is over and everybody has gone home.

Read your committee, it is telling you something

There is a shortcut for anyone still unsure after the handbook. Look at who sits on your committee and what they publish. Weighted toward clinicians and administrators who write about implementation, it is supervising a practice project regardless of what the form is called.

Made up of people who publish original studies, with a methodologist in the room whose function is to interrogate your design, it is supervising research. Programs differ wildly in what they name things. Committees are much harder to disguise, and when the handbook and the committee disagree, the committee is the one that grades you.

The critical path runs through different places

This matters more than the writing and almost nobody plans around it. A practice timeline is hostage to a setting: organisational approval, somebody inside willing to sponsor you, access to data they already collect, and a window long enough to implement and then measure. None of it is under your control and all of it runs longer than the handbook implies.

A research timeline is hostage to a committee and to recruitment. Rounds of feedback, a review board, participants who arrive slowly. Both routes are slow, but they are slow in different places, and building a calendar around the wrong bottleneck is how a doctoral student loses a term without doing anything wrong. Identify the dependency you genuinely have, then work the calendar backwards from it.

The two ways people go wrong

In one direction, a practice student produces an elegant review, identifies a genuine gap and proposes original research to fill it. The committee returns it because nothing in the proposal changes anything anywhere. The work is good. It is the wrong document.

In the other, a research student takes a problem from their own workplace, designs an intervention and measures it, then cannot say what the study contributes beyond that one building. Both did months of competent work aimed at the wrong target, and both were preventable by the sentence at the top of this page, written in week one and shown to another person.

Questions people actually ask.

My program calls it a capstone. Which do I have?

The name settles nothing. Look instead at what the handbook requires you to produce and what your committee publishes. A requirement to implement something and measure it in a real setting is a practice project. A requirement to answer a question the literature has left open, defended on method, is research. Where the two disagree, the committee decides.

Does a DNP project need original data?

It needs measurement, which is not the same thing. Most projects use what the setting already records, such as audits, chart reviews or existing quality indicators, compared before and after the change. Collecting new data from people usually pulls a review board into your timeline, so work with what exists unless the question truly cannot be answered that way.

Can I turn a DNP project into a publication?

Frequently, and quality improvement journals publish them routinely. Write against a recognised reporting framework from the beginning rather than reformatting afterwards. What it will not become is an original research paper, because the design was never built to support claims beyond your own setting, and reviewers identify that immediately.

How long does site approval actually take?

Longer than the handbook suggests, and it is the most underestimated item in any practice timeline. Assume weeks rather than days, assume the person who agreed verbally will need somebody above them to sign, and open the conversation before the proposal is finished rather than after. A finished proposal with no site is a stalled term.

Is a dissertation harder than a project?

Different rather than harder, and each is difficult exactly where the other is easy. A dissertation demands a defensible method and tolerates a slow world. A project demands an organisation that cooperates and tolerates a modest question. People who thrive on one often struggle with the other, which is worth knowing before choosing rather than after.
